The Helena Experiment

"The Helena Experiment" 30 by 40 oil on canvas From the tv show Orphan black. The title has a   double meaning, One is my using a thick impasto and knife work and leaving things a bit untidy, something im still working on. the other reason is its supposed during her "training days" and before she meets her sisters, here Helena is about to start her angel wings.
Yea yea.. who's going to want this on there wall!!!???,..Who cares I wanted to do it......

Wicked

12"by12" oil on board "Wicked". Summer at high noon near Dundas sq. The trick for me doing a loose, free style of painting is to leave well enough alone and not pick at it adding and changing.... So! there it is...

Academy of Realist Art

This is the "study" I did recently at a work shop at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto. It is Saint Jerome writing, Caravaggio. The original painted in 1605 approx. is 44"/62" this one is much smaller 14"/18" so the detail isnt there. but the work shop was very useful, Caravaggio was "odd" ( if you consider a crazed murderer odd)  in life and it reflected in his method and style.

ca·thar·sis

noun \kə-ˈthär-səs\
: the act or process of releasing a strong emotion (such as pity or fear) especially by expressing it in an art form.

These were two large unfinished  paintings that represent hundreds of hours of work. For technical reasons they were never going to be completed, destroying them was a good way to stop them from bothering me ever again...

12 by 12 oil on board,... New York Times Square. Rachell went to New York last year so I thought she would like this one.
I am forced to wonder if too much colour can take away from the night time in the rain image that people like. perhaps because it is Times Square I can get away with it?...

11 by 14 oil on board, again in a loose quick style of painting.                                                                       "the Hotel Waverly"                                                      Including the comfort zone and the silver dollar, two, well... lets say interesting live music and drinking establishments , "just the right amount of seediness" its said.
This may not be the best subject for some but, I think this important part of Toronto's history should be painted as it is soon to become a just a memory .In its place will be some cookie cutter condo high rise...

12 by 12 oil on board,  Yonge st at King st.
the fast loose style of painting still makes me a bit uncomfortable but im going to keep trying until its second nature. its something ill need if im to start doing more "plein air" work...

19 Light Dragoon

hmmm... Okay, war of 1812! 30by40 oil on canvas. 19 light Dragoon.  the painting is to be about the horse and uniform so the high noon sun casting a shadow over the riders face works for me . the riders face is much more visible when viewing the painting itself, the camera makes it look darker but anyone who knows the rider would see him easily and know who he is .
